As you know, the decommissioning of the Purdy MRI scanner was scheduled for the end of 2020. However, the requirements of UBC-wide research curtailment due to the COVID pandemic had a significant negative effect on the financial situation of the UBC MRI Research Centre. As you are aware, the Centre relies entirely on users’ fees to remain financially self-sufficient. As a result of the curtailment our revenue decreased dramatically over the last 5 months. In light of this situation, the Core Group Committee of the Centre has found that it is no longer sustainable to operate both Purdy and CBH scanners, and the best solution is to move the date for decommissioning the Purdy scanner from December to the end of August 2020. The majority of our researchers have already transitioned to the new scanner; however, we are aware that this decision may negatively affect some of the ongoing studies. It was not an easy decision to make, but I hope that you appreciate the very difficult situation we are currently in.
On behalf of the Centre, I would like to thank you for your ongoing support, and we are looking forward to continue working with you.
Director, UBC MRI Research Centre
