UPDATE (2024-05-15):
The UBC MRI Research facility recently underwent an equipment upgrade and now hosts Canada’s first Philips 3.0T MR7700 MRI scanner! The system’s new capabilities include:
- Diffusion imaging with significantly improved data quality, enabling visualization of the brain’s neural pathways with amazing clarity, thanks to diffusion gradients reaching up to 65 mT/m and 220 T/m/s
- The new multi-nuclear spectrometer is a game-changer, enabling researchers to explore beyond the proton (1H)
- Sodium (23Na) MRI is used to assess brain cell and cartilage health
- Phosphorus (31P) MR spectroscopy is applied to understand cellular energy dynamics in a variety of anatomies

UPDATE (2023-04-12):
As you may be aware the Provincial Health Officer announced the end of respiratory illness season on April 6th and rescinded most of the remaining pandemic public health orders. A summary of the current orders:
- Masks: are now optional (not required) for subjects, visitors and staff. We will continue to provide masks in the waiting room for staff and subjects who wish to wear one and do not have their own.
- Covid-19 Risk Assessment Screening: is no longer required when booking appointments or doing reminder calls/emails. Please continue to stay home if you are sick and instruct your participants to do the same. There is no cancellation charge for personal illness/possible COVID.
- Mandatory COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses minimum): remains in place for anyone working in hospital/healthcare spaces.
Please contact Laura Barlow or Piotr Kozlowski if you have any questions/concerns.
